Ostreococcus mediterraneus

The genus Ostreococcus was initially described from the type strain, Ostreococcus tauri isolated from the Thau mediterranean lagoon. Subsequent phylogenetic analysis based on the small ribosomal RNA gene revealed Ostreococcus is separated into 4 clades: A, B, C and D

the original species, O. tauri belonging to clade C. Ostreococcus mediterraneus is the species designation of the former designation Ostreococcus sp. clade D that was originally isolated in the north west Mediterranean Sea and lagoons.
