Species: Solanum tuberosum

Description
Solanum tuberosum, better known as potato, is an important crop in temperate zones all over the world (19 million Ha of arable land are dedicated to grow potatoes). Its ability to store large amounts of starch in underground tubers makes it an excellent, energy rich food. However its susceptibility to potato blight causes considerable damages to harvests (an estimated 3 billion euro are lost due to this pest). With the potato genome, resistance genes can be identified and assist breeders in making resistant varieties.
