Hordeum vulgare, commonly known as barley, is an important cereal which is grown in both temperate and tropical regions (as a summer and winter crop respectively). Barley has a long history of cultivation dating back to 8500 BC, currently it is grown for animal fodder, brewing beer and as a health food.
