Abstract
Mammalian splicing factor SF3a consists of three subunits of 60, 66, and 120kDa and functions early during pre-mRNA splicing by converting the U2 snRNP to its active form [ 1 ]. The 120kDa subunit (SF3a120) has a carboxy-terminal ubiquitin-like domain and two SWAP (suppressor-of-white-apricot) domains, referred to collectively as the SURP module, at its amino-terminus [ 2 ].
This entry represents SF3a120 (also known as SF3A1) and its homologues such as Prp21 from budding yeasts and Sap114 from fission yeasts.1. Stem-loop 4 of U1 snRNA is essential for splicing and interacts with the U2 snRNP-specific SF3A1 protein during spliceosome assembly. Genes Dev 28, 2518-31
2. Mammalian splicing factor SF3a120 represents a new member of the SURP family of proteins and is homologous to the essential splicing factor PRP21p of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. RNA 1, 260-72
