Abstract

6-Phosphogluconolactonase ( 3.1.1.31 ) hydrolyses 6-phosphogluconolactone to 6-phosphogluconate. It is a component of the pentose phosphate pathway, required for the synthesis of D-ribulose 5-phosphate from D-glucose 6-phosphate [ 1 ]. The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae possesses four homologues, but 6-phosphogluconolactonase-like proteins 1 and 2 lack 6-phosphogluconolactonase activity [ 2 ].
