General Information

Abstract

The ASPG1 (aspartic protease in guard cell 1) peptidase (MEROPS identifier A01.A09) from Arabidopsis thaliana has been shown to be caseinolytic and sensitive to the inhibitor pepstatin. The ASPG1 gene is expressed only in the guard cells that form the stomatal pore in the epidermis of leaves. Overexpression of the gene in drought conditions increased sensitivity to the signalling molecule abscisic acid, leading to reducing water loss through the stomata [ 1 ].
