Abstract
SHORT-ROOT (SHR) is a transcription factor required for asymmetric cell division involved in radial pattern formation in roots (cortex/endodermis differentiation) [ 1 ] and root vascular patterning [ 2 ]. It is a mobile transcription factor that acts in a concentration-dependent manner [ 3 ]. SHR is also involved in the developmental pathway for bundle sheath (BS) cell-fate specification. BS cells form a single cell layer surrounding the vascular tissue in leaves. SHR is expressed in the central vascular tissue, but moves into the BS cells where directly regulates SCR (Scarecrow) and SCL23 (Scarecrow-like 23) expression [ 4 ].
