Abstract
This entry represents serine/threonine-protein kinases ( 2.7.11.1 ) such as Rio1. RIO kinases are atypical members of the protein kinase family that are required for ribosome biogenesis and cell cycle progression [ 1 ]. Rio1 is present in all organisms from archaea to mammals, and was shown to be absolutely essential in Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Baker's yeast) for the processing of 18S ribosomal RNA, as well as for proper cell cycle progression and chromosome maintenance [ 2 ].
