Abstract
This family includes the cocaine esterase CocE and several putative serine esterases. CocE from Rhodococcus hydrolyses cocaine to benzoate and ecgonine methyl ester, allowing this bacterium to use cocaine as the sole source of carbon and energy. The amino acid sequence of cocaine esterase has a region of similarity with the active serine consensus of X-prolyl dipeptidyl aminopeptidases, suggesting that the cocaine esterase is a serine esterase [ 1 ].
