Abstract

This domain contains several highly conserved charged amino acids, suggesting this may be an enzymatic domain. It is found in Escherichia coli YdcF, which has been shown to bind S-adenosyl-L-methionine (AdoMet), but whose biochemical function has not been identified [ 1 ]. It is also found in Escherichia coli SanA and Salmonella typhimurium SfiX, which are involved in vancomycin resistance [ 2 , 3 ]. SfiX may also be involved in murein synthesis.

1. The Escherichia coli YdcF binds S-adenosyl-L-methionine and adopts an alpha/beta-fold characteristic of nucleotide-utilizing enzymes. Proteins 72, 506-9
2. Amplification of a novel gene, sanA, abolishes a vancomycin-sensitive defect in Escherichia coli. J. Bacteriol. 178, 94-102
