Abstract
Thymidine kinase (TK) ( 2.7.1.21 ) is an ubiquitous enzyme that catalyzes the ATP-dependent phosphorylation of thymidine.
Two different families of thymidine kinase have been identified [ 1 , 2 ] and are represented in this entry; one groups together thymidine kinase from herpesviruses, as well as cytosolic thymidylate kinases and the second family groups thymidine kinase from various sources that include, vertebrates, bacteria, the bacteriophage T4, poxviruses, African swine fever virus (ASFV) and fish lymphocystis disease virus (FLDV). The major capsid protein of insect iridescent viruses also belongs to this family.
