Spider mite Genome Annotation

Chelicerates (scorpions, horseshoe crabs, spiders, mites and ticks) are the second largest group of arthropods. The development of a chelicerate model system has been hampered by their complex ontogeny, long development time and large genomes. The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, is choosing as chelicerate genetic model because of many reasons:
  1. the smallest genome of any arthropod,
  2. extremely rapid development,
  3. being maintained easily in the laboratory and
  4. one of the major pests of agricultural crops.
The initial step to develop the genetic model requires integration of bioinformatics with genomics and genetics to establish the genetic bases in spider mite. Therefore, we are taking part in analyzing the spider mite genome. We use EnGene, a gene prediction platform for eukaryotes, for genome annotation of T. urticae.
