Structural and and comparative analysis of the Candida bombicola genomeThe yeast Candida bombicola is a production strain that naturally produces sophorolipids from glucose and vegetable oils in high yield and efficiency. This strain will be modified by metabolic engineering to produce new-tonature and tailor-made glycolipids. By adding, deleting or combining the five genes that intervene in glycolipid biosynthesis, both the lipid tail and the carbohydrate head can be modified. Thus, a vast range of glycolipids can be obtained, extending the biosynthetic capabilities of the production strain far beyond its natural synthesis power for sophorolipids.
In order to better understand and modify the production strain Candida bombicola ATCC 22214, its genome will be fully sequenced. The whole genome of Candida glabrata CBS138 is known and published and several other projects are underway to sequence the genomes of Candida albicans, Candida dubliniensis, Candida parapsilosis, Candida tropicalis, Candida lusitaniae and Candida guilliermondii. In view of the heterogeneity of the Candida genus, it was decided not to rely on these data and to determine the full genome sequence of the production organism used in this project. Li Bing will perform the gene prediction and genome annotation of this genome sequence and will also perform comparative genomics analyses with other yeasts.
